About Utopia Martial Arts & Fitness

Utopia Martial Arts is ran by coaches Megan, Lauren and Alicia Abel. All of Utopia’s coaches have been doing martial arts for over 10 years. The coaches have experience in competing in competitions both nationally and internationally and years of experience in coaching students within martial arts.

Utopia Martial Arts also provides fitness classes ran by Lauren Abel designed for adults who want to take part in a active lesson designed to improve their strength. There is a variety of lessons to take part in alongside personal training (PT) lessons where you work with Lauren on improving your personal fitness goals.

Our programs


Weapons Gradings

At Utopia, we introduced a weapons and open hand assessment for students who take part in our weapons classes. This was designed to provide the opportunity for students who do not take part in our regular karate classes to gain belts of a different styles and be able to have a visible representation of their progress. These assessments take place every four months while our karate gradings are every three months. Unlike our karate gradings, these assessments take place during the students regular week class unless they are going for green stripe and above. Students who are going for green


Karate Gradings

At Utopia, if a student takes part in karate classes they are eligable for our karate gradings. If a student is part of our Little Ninja’s, this won’t apply to them until they move up into an older class when suited. In 2023, there will be four karate gradings which will be listed below (they are also listed on the calender on the events page). If a student is deemed eligable for a grading, they will be handed a slip to fill at home and bring back to a member of the team to confirm your participation. Advanced belts will


One To One

Here at Utopia we offer 121 lessons where you can book to be taught by Megan, Lauren or Alicia, working by yourself with the coach to help focus on specific skills you want to improve. Karate

Monday 5-6pm, 6-7pm Tuesday 5-6pm. 7-8pm Wednesday 6-7pm Thursday 5:15-6:15pm

At Utopia, we offer karate classes designed to teach students the skills they need to develop their ability and strength within a fun environment. The students work with the coaches allowing them to learn from professionals and they work with other students to develop friendships and to help each other improve and progress. The classes are designed to suit a variety of ages and abilities with the class age starting from 7 years old upwards. This style of class take place on the following days: Monday: 5:00-6:00pm = this class is for notice to intermediate students. It’s perfect for students


Birthday Parties

Here at utopia we do a range of birthday parties from weapons, karate, games and flips. A party suitable for anyone at any age! We will let the student who’s birthday it is choose what they want to do during their party so we can customise it to fit what they like. They can do all activities or can choose specific things they want to focus on. Flips

Tuesday 6-7pm Wednesday 5-6pm & 7-8pm Thursday 6:00-7:00pm Friday 5:30-7:00pm Saturday 11:45-1:15pm Megan, Lauren and Alicia

Our flips lesson includes learning a variety of gymnastic skills suitable for all abilties. We have matted areas, airpads and highly experienced coaches who are there to help each student work towards their own personal goals. We offer this type of class every working day except Mondays with some classes being merged together with weapons: Tuesday: 6:00-7:00pm – This is a merged class with both weapons and flips Wednesday: 5:00-6:00pm & 7:00-8:00pm – Our 5:00-6:00pm class is merged with both weapons and flips designed for younger, novice students who don’t have much experience in weapons and flips. Megan Abel

Martial Arts Instructor.

Megan Abel is 15 times world champion and won several European and British Titles has been an instructor for 8 years. She is 4th Dan Black Belt in Freestyle Karate & 2nd Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo. Her speciality is Samurai Sword and Tricking.  


Lauren Abel

Martial Arts & Fitness Instructor

Lauren is a 1st Dan Black belts and specialises in our Totopia, Little Ninjas and fitness classes. She is a qualified level 2 personal trainer and a level 3 T.A in child sports play and has worked with children from age 3+ since she was 17. Lauren is very passonite about fitness and living a healthy lifestyle and enjoys weight training and boxercise.


Alicia Abel

Martial Arts Instructor

Alicia is a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Freestyle Karate and has been teaching for 6 years. She specialises in weapons training especially Bo staff. She has won two gold medals in the World Championships and won several British and European championships.

FAQ



What are the age ranges?

We offer classes to students from 2 years old upwards.
Our totopia class is for 2-4 year olds.
Our little ninjas are designed for children ranging from 4-7 years old.
Our karate/kickboxing/taekwondo/weapons and flips classes are for children 7 years upwards
Our fitness classes are designed for adults.


No you do not need any past experience to join the classes. You can be experienced or inexperienced.


Yes, we do gradings where students earn their new belts to eventually achieve black belt. This applies for karate, weapons/flips and taekwondo.

New Website

Welcome to Utopia Martial Arts. This website provides an overview of the club, class timetable and other useful information.   We provide a range of exciting Martial Arts training including: Semi-contact Kickboxing, Traditional Karate Katas, Musical & Extreme Forms (Open-hand and with Weapons). We cater for all ages from 4 upwards.    In addition to classes at our Headquarters in central Sheffield we also offer “after school” clubs, daytime school classes and PE lessons and Martial Arts Birthday Parties. We are available for special occasions and fun events by prior appointment.
